What is Social Judaism?

Israeli society is beset by increasing polarization between haredim and secular Jews, and to a lesser extent between Ashkenazim and Sephardim. Social and political lines are drawn over the debate regarding which of Israel’s democratic or Jewish features should be heightened or relegated to the other. There is a quest for contemporary Jewish identity and Israel’s civic identity to be based upon socio-public responsibility that overcomes the increasing extremism and schisms in Israeli society.

Mikveh Israel

The Mikveh Israel Youth Village was established by Alliance Israelite Universelle - KIAH in 1867, and has operated as an educational institution ever since. Changes in the educational social environment have led the Alliance to collaborate with the Rashi Foundation in order to preserve the historic heritage of the Alliance and to position Mikveh as an educational cultural center. This project has three main components: building a modern campus, restoring the historic site as an educational-cultural visitors centre, and creating a green lung in the heart of the urban area.

A Modern Educational Campus
Mikveh Yisrael includes three high schools: a general school, a religious school and a French-Israeli school. Under the renewal plan, the western part of the village will become an educational campus that houses the school buildings, dormitories and sports centre as well as an innovative national centre for the professional development of teachers in the sciences and technology.

Visitors Center on the Historic Site
The centre will preserve the spirit of the early settlement in Eretz Israel, creating a meaningful experience for visitors. Historic structures such as the synagogue and winery will be renewed and their authenticity restored according to Israel's preservation laws. One of the buildings will serve as a museum dedicated to the heritage of the Alliance.

Green Lung
Green areas, perhaps the last in the vast metropolis of Tel Aviv and surrounding areas, will become part of the Ariel Sharon Park, currently under construction in the southern suburbs of Tel Aviv, and will serve as a green lung and nature, sport and recreation site.

Darca

As part of the effort to renew and deepen its involvement in Israeli education, the Alliance has joined with the Rashi Foundation to establish Darca, a network of high schools that combines quality education with social responsibility in order to create positive, permanent change.

Darca's guiding principles include: enabling youngsters to achieve scholastic excellence irrespective of the financial ability of their family or local municipality; placing social, Jewish and cultural education at the centre of school life, while giving expression to each student's family and religious identity; and integrating innovative models in order to further scholastic achievements and excellence. These principals are achieved through a variety of methods, such as enabling all students to study for a full matriculation diploma, adding courses of study, coordinating formal and informal education, and involving students in cultural activities. Other elements include creating a science-intensive environment, encouraging research and creativity in teaching, professional development of the teaching staff, organization and design of the learning space and more.

The educational curricula and pedagogical development of Darca's teaching staff revolve around the twin themes of educational excellence and social Jewish education. They will be implemented by increasing the motivation to learn, developing social and environmental responsibility and cultivating frameworks for community involvement, while providing a personal response to individual needs, along with comprehensive social activity and the joint training of teachers from religious, secular and traditional backgrounds.

Alliance schools that operate in the Muslim, Christian, and Druze sectors are rooted in their connection to their traditions, as part of the network's responsibility to minorities.

Kol Israel Haverim - Alliance
A Tradition of Social Responsibility & Educational Excellence

Alliance - Kol Israel Haverim (KIAH) is a leading educational organization in Israel, and part of the Alliance Israélite Universelle organization that was established in 1860 in France in order to promote solidarity among Jews worldwide. The founders of Alliance Israélite Universelle created a bold educational framework enabling Jewish pupils in Islamic countries to integrate into their surrounding environment by providing them with modern education while simultaneously strengthening their Jewish traditions.

Over a million students have passed through Alliance Israelite Universelle - KIAH (Kol Israel Haverim) institutes and programs.

In Israel, Kol Israel Haverim (KIAH) works within formal and informal educational frameworks and reaches over 50,000 people a year across Israeli society, with a focus on the country’s social and geographic peripheries. KIAH works towards two main goals:

  • Advance educational excellence for all children regardless of socio-economic status or geographic location that in turn will lead to increased social mobility.
  • Offer a Jewish education that emphasizes social responsibility and involvement, while cultivating Jewish leadership committed to social activism.
